Up and Coming Canadian Artist & Songwriter Olivia Lunny talks new EP release!

Looking for some pop music to ease those quarantine blues? Olivia Lunny is a name you’re going to want to jot down! The Canadian Artist and Songwriter has garnered international attention with her polished vocals and uber-relatable lyrics. Lunny went from winning CTV’s singing competition The Launch to releasing her passionate debut EP, To The Ones I Loved and there’s no sign of stopping there.

One song at a time, Lunny captivates the listener with each blissful melody. Her music career is undoubtedly on the rise, and Fandomize got the chance to ask the up and coming artist some in depth questions.

MCKENZIE MORRELL: Thank you for joining us today! First off, congratulations on the new EP release! Can you talk a bit about your origin story, and when you knew you wanted to pursue a career in music?

OLIVIA LUNNY: Thank you so much! I’m an up and coming Canadian Artist & Songwriter. Although my music is very pop, a lot of the initial song ideas come from a place of folk/indie.  Growing up I would play local gigs around the city at coffee shops etc. By the enf of high school my passion for music grew stronger and led me to choosing the path of a career in music vs. post secondary.

MM: Which one band or artist were you the biggest fan of/inspired by in your younger years and has that inspiration/love changed at all?

OL: Coldplay has been a constant in my life forever. I’ve always been inspired by and intrigued by their musical choices. I also love how theory songs are written and uniquely stamped with their sound.

MM: Your new EP, “To the Ones I Loved” was recently released on August 28th on all platforms– how has it been since it dropped? I’m sure you’re getting great feedback already!

OL: I have been overwhelmed with the positive response it has been receiving so far. Sharing such vulnerable songs is a hard thing to do, but hearing that people resonate with them makes me so incredibly happy!

MM: I know this is the equivalent of asking who your favorite child is as a parent, but do you have a favorite song off of the EP? (They’re all amazing, but ‘Think of Me’ is my personal favorite!)

OL: I’m so glad you love that one! The songs are all so different so It’s truly hard to compare BUT- “Bedsheets” is the most personal/special track to me as it’s very close to my heart.

MM: How would you describe your sound using only emojis to someone who has never heard your music before?

OL: 🌌👯‍♂️💆‍♀️💥

MM: What was the first concert you remember going to?

OL: I vividly remember going to see Hillary Duff with my dad on one of her fist stadium tours!

MM: Who inspires you? And where is the most common place you draw your inspiration from?

OL: My brother is someone who inspires me- he is constantly evolving and pursuing his ideas fearlessly. I’m also very inspired by the environment around me (whether that’s at my cottage on the lake or in a condo in a large city).

MM: You participated in AristsCAN charity single “Lean on Me” alongside Justin Bieber, Avril Lavigne, and Michael Bublé. All proceeds of the single are being donated to the Canadian Red Cross to help fight COVID-19 in Canada. How did you get involved with this project? Why is it important that the world take this pandemic seriously?

OL: It was truly an honor to be a part of a project with such incredible artists representing our amazing country. My friend and fellow musician Tyler Shaw helped start the initiative and involved me. As far apart as we are right now, it’s been so beautiful to come together with others to spread the message of hope. The response to the song so far has been incredible. It’s so important to take the pandemic seriously to avoid a second outbreak and more long months of isolation! (wear a mask)

MM: Who are some artists that you’d love to collaborate with?

OL: I’ve been loving Harry Styles new album, Making music with Coldplay would be a dream too.

MM: What is one misconception about the music industry that you’d like to shed light on?

OL: That things happen overnight! I find theres often so much talk about the success of artists and their immediate rise to the top. In actuality, it’s usually the combination of years of work and small victories that create the “explosion” of a career!

MM: If you had to dip your toes into a different genre of music, what would it be? What makes that genre enticing to you?

OL: I would revisit Folk music for sure. Paper Kites style/ The Staves vibe!

MM: I like to include my signature question into all of my interviews– if you were to construct a donut based on your personality what kind of donut would it be and what kind of toppings would be on it?

OL: Okay WOW-what a great question! Confetti Cake Donut with Matcha Icing sprinkled with Fruit Loops

MM: If you could give your younger self any advice, what would it be and why?

OL: Be Patient, be present and good things will come your way!

MM: Anything else you’d like to add that you are working on or a message to your fans?

OL: Thank you for listening to my music!! <3 be kind.

MM: Thank you for taking the time to chat with fandomize.com, we can’t wait to see what’s next!

OL: Thank you so much for chatting, appreciate the support very much 🙂
